Jealousy

Can you be genuinely happy for someone while also being absolutely raging that it wasn't you?

By Carly Osman-Holme · 5 min read

Someone gets the promotion. Wins the award. Announces the pregnancy. Buys the house. Gets invited to the thing you weren't invited to. You love them. You're pleased for them. You also have a horrible little feeling in the pit of your stomach that you'd really rather wasn't there.

This conversation gets into the jealousy we don't like admitting to, particularly between women. What it tells us about what we want, why someone else's success can sometimes feel like our failure, and whether jealousy might actually be useful if we stop pretending we never feel it.

The success that feels like a verdict

Jealousy rarely arrives as a clean emotion. It tends to show up tangled with shame: you shouldn't feel this way, you should be bigger than this, you are a bad friend for even noticing. So we bury it, perform delight and then wonder why we feel so alone with the feeling.

Jealousy isn't really about the other person. It's about the thing we fear we might never get.

What jealousy is trying to tell you

  • It points to a desire you may have been dismissing as selfish or unrealistic.
  • It reveals the standards you are quietly using to measure your own life.
  • It often shows up most painfully with the people closest to us.
  • It can become information rather than evidence that you are failing.

Recorded as a live conversation, this episode doesn't tidy jealousy into a lesson. It sits with the contradiction: that we can be generous and petty, happy for someone and absolutely raging, all in the same breath. And it asks what might change if we brought that contradiction into the light instead of hiding it.
